Can Dogs Eat Potato Chips?

AVOID

AVOID — Potato chips and crisps are high in salt and fat and often flavoured with onion or garlic. One plain chip is unlikely to harm, but they are not a suitable snack.

Potato chips (crisps) are salty, greasy and often flavoured with onion, garlic or cheese powders. A single plain one is unlikely to harm, but regular sharing can cause salt and fat problems.

A single dropped chip is unlikely to cause serious harm; watch for stomach upset and offer fresh water. Contact your veterinarian if your dog ate a lot, or the chips were onion- or garlic-flavoured. If your dog vomits repeatedly, has a painful belly, is very thirsty, wobbly or very quiet, contact a veterinarian, or an emergency veterinary clinic out of hours, straight away.

The full answer

Plain potato chips are not toxic, and a chip dropped on the floor is unlikely to harm a healthy dog. But they are very salty and greasy, and they offer no useful nutrition.

Flavoured varieties are worse. Sour cream and onion, barbecue, cheese and many others contain onion powder, garlic powder and extra salt, which are harmful to dogs. Too much salt can cause excessive thirst and, in large amounts, salt poisoning.

Tortilla chips and similar snacks have the same issues. If you want to share a crunchy snack, a slice of carrot or cucumber is a much better option.
