The full answer
Sour cream, double cream and plain whipped cream are not toxic to dogs, and a small lick is unlikely to cause a problem. They are rich and high in fat, and many dogs struggle to digest lactose.
Larger amounts can cause vomiting and diarrhoea, and the fat can trigger pancreatitis in susceptible dogs. Flavoured sour cream dips, especially onion or chive dips, are harmful, and some sugar-free whipped creams or dessert toppings may contain xylitol.
Whipped cream from a can is a common treat for pets, but even then it should be a lick, not a serving. Choose lower-fat dog-safe treats instead.
Is Sour Cream Good for Dogs?
Cream and sour cream provide fat and a little calcium and protein, but a dog on a complete diet does not need them.
