The full answer
Fresh blackcurrants are dark, tart berries. They are not known to be toxic to dogs, and a very small number may be offered as an occasional treat.
The biggest warning is about the word currant. Dried currants sold for baking, such as Zante currants, are actually small dried grapes, and grapes and raisins are toxic to dogs and can cause kidney failure. Fruit cakes, scones and hot cross buns that contain them must be kept away from dogs.
Blackcurrant jam, cordial, squash and pastry contain a lot of sugar, and some sugar-free versions may contain xylitol, which is dangerous. Stick to a few plain fresh or thawed berries, and ask your vet if you are unsure.
Is Blackcurrants Good for Dogs?
Blackcurrants contain vitamin C, fibre and plant compounds such as anthocyanins. Dogs make their own vitamin C, so they do not need it from fruit.
