The full answer
Artichokes are the flower buds of a thistle-like plant. Plain, cooked artichoke hearts are not toxic to dogs, and a small piece offers some fibre and nutrients.
The outer leaves are tough and fibrous, and the hairy choke in the centre is hard to digest and can irritate the mouth or cause blockage. Stick to the soft heart. Marinated, jarred and canned artichokes are often packed in oil with garlic, herbs and salt, and spinach-artichoke dips contain garlic, onion, cheese and cream.
Artichoke is not essential for dogs, so treat it as a rare extra. Large amounts of fibre can cause gas or loose stools.
