The full answer
This page covers commercial cat food, wet or dry, eaten by a dog. The veterinary guidance we reviewed doesn't distinguish between wet and dry cat food.
PetMD says a small amount of cat food won't cause problems for most dogs, but feeding it isn't recommended. Cat food is formulated for cats, not dogs.
Eating too much can cause vomiting and diarrhoea, and because cat food is rich, it may lead to pancreatitis in some dogs.
Risks and Things to Know
- Stomach upset: vomiting and diarrhoea.
- Pancreatitis in some dogs, especially with large amounts.
- Weight gain if a dog regularly eats the cat's food.
How much is okay?
Not recommended as food or a treat. It's richer in fat and protein than dog food is meant to be. Feed cats where dogs can't reach their bowls.
How Should I Prepare It?
- Not recommended in any form.
- Keep cat bowls and food out of the dog's reach.
